xy

Xy is the next evolution of the Tom system, delivering travel along a 2-dimensional path for cinematic strafing, zigzagging, and around-the-corner shots with a DSLR camera. Diving deeper into Xy's software development, other unique photography opportunities await: programming a grid on which to call out camera positions, or "sketching" the cameras path in a browser for a more tangible UI experince.

sorry bro

Xy utilizes standard aluminum extrusion framing, so it's super modular. The system can be built to any length or width up to eight feet. It's modularity also allows it to be nested into a third "z" axis. More to come on that soon :)

Xy is designed to be low profile and light weight, making its mounting options practically amphibious. These cool 1/4"-20 suction cups have been great for placing it on glass. They're coming in handy for whiteboard sketch time lapses, too.

Experimenting with the physical computing side of things, I implemented node.js and Johnny Five motor libraries to control Xy from a web browser, via keypresses. Good stuff. Pretty close to full-on cyber dildonics with this lol.

For its initial prototype, I manually milled all of Xy's polycarbonate parts by hand [pats own back]. Friends with CNC machines were tied up that summer. Lucky for me though, I'm "nice wit it." Never hurts to take a step back and keep things fully analog. At least that's what I tell myself when the wifi's out and I'm in heat lol.

open source

Xy is an open-sourced project. I know, I'm such a nice guy. Below you'll find a complete bill of materials. All custom components can be milled from 1/2" thick polycarbonate, or material of your choice. CAD models and drawings thereof are to the right. What are you waiting for? Fire up your pirated copy of Solidworks today and get to making. Try not to email me if you can help it.
