35mm Daikanyama & Meguro, Tokyo

I took a walk with a new friend, Ananda, through Daikanyama and later along the river in Meguro. Ananda is cool. The walk was cool. Daikanyama and Meguro are collectively an up-and-coming—or maybe post-up-and-coming—area, with a strong “neighborhood” vibe. There are lots of charming “little shops,” alongside fancier spots like an APC and the flagship Tsutaya bookstore, which might honestly be the nicest bookstore anywhere.

I spent some days in Daikanyama and Meguro and continuously got the, “Oh I could for sure live here” feeling. Sort of reminded me of Berlin, with the quirky, efficient housing buildings, art vibes, and the river-as-a-third-space situation.

I brought my 35mm lens on the walk. I try not to get too caught up in “gear,” but this trip confirmed for me that the Canon 35mm lens doesn’t hold much of an edge over the 50mm. I will keep reaching for the 50mm. Here are some pictures with the 35mm in the meantime.

A funny thing happened when Ananda and I eventually went to get dinner. We discovered that we’re both indecisive when it comes to choosing where to eat. Our indecisiveness multiplied together and it took us probably an hour to settle on a place. To our credit, though, the place we chose was good. The guy sitting next to us rescued me from nearly ordering “organs” from what I mistook as the “ramen” side of the menu. Love him for that.
